SPRING BREAK 2012 IS OVER: ITS TIME TO FIND A JOB!

That's right. Many schools start back today and that means just over two months until the beginning of summer. I know summer seems like a long way away, but now is when many employers start looking for summer help.

Looking for a job right now is a good idea for many reasons:

1) It will impress employers that you are looking this early and they will know you are serious about finding work

2) The early bird gets the worm right? More jobs will be available if you start looking now. The longer you wait, jobs will fill up fast and be taken.

3) You might need to polish up your interviewing skills and that takes time. Beginning the job search early means you have more jobs to interview for and that means more practice talking to hiring managers.

4) Not only are more jobs available now but more kinds of jobs. Getting out there real soon will give you access to a larger variety of jobs that might not be there if you wait until it closer to summer.

FACEBOOK AND TWITTER CAN COST YOU A JOB

If you are 17 and looking for a job, you need to watch what you do and say on sites like Facebook and Twitter. Even if you think your account is password protected, word now is that some employers, government agencies, and colleges are asking for access to your accounts. You can read the story here.

The fact is that what you say online can put your education and job search in jeopardy. It is just plain stupid to write all sorts of personal information about yourself and get into arguments online in these accounts. Teenagers have to start realizing that when they go online and post things, what they say is there possibly forever. Even if there is a password guarding your account, there is no guarantee that what you say will be safe.

Employers are now VERY AWARE that they can find all sorts of dirt on potential employees by what they post on those sites. More and more of them are trying to find Facebook accounts of job applicants and so you have to realize this is a very real threat to you getting a job, if you are misbehaving online.

When you are young you don't often realize what can happen with the things you post on the Internet. Teenagers don't understand that what they do today REALLY CAN adversely affect what happens to them in the future.

Hunting for a job this summer will be a tough task for all 17 year olds and teens of all ages. The economy continues to be bad which means not enough companies are hiring to meed the demand. Be careful what you do online so that it doesn't come back to hurt you if you get an employer interested in hiring you!

FINDING A JOB = HARD WORK

It is probably true that it is harder to find a job when you are 17 years old than when you are an adult. That can be for a variety of reasons including a lack of experience, maturity, education, and employers hesitancy to hire teenage workers. But one thing is the same for you now that will still be the same for you as an adult: IT TAKES HARD WORK TO FIND A JOB NO MATTER HOW OLD YOU ARE!

A lot of people put their resumes up on job sites like Monster, Job.com, Snagajob and others and then sit back and wait. THAT IS THE WRONG APPROACH. That might work if we had very low unemployment rates but right now with them being so high, you have to go to the jobs and not expect them to come to you!

When looking for jobs for 17 year olds, you need to do everything you can to find them and apply to them. That might include:

1) networking (means letting everyone know you want a job)
2) sending out resumes
3) scouring online job boards for openings and ideas
4) studying the companies you are going to apply to
5) starting to learn job interview skills
6) learning how to always be upbeat and positive
5) and generally working your butt off

Hopefully the economy will someday turn around making jobs easier to find. But the lesson you are learning now that job hunting is NOT easy and TAKES A LOT Of WORK is a great lesson to remember when you get older. Jobs are valuable and everyone wants and needs them. They will ALWAYS be competitive and should never be taken for granted.

HAVE YOU ASKED YOUR PARENTS FOR HELP FINDING A JOB?

It is July 2011 already and a big number of teenagers have been unable to find work. If you are one of them, have you asked your parents for some help?

When I was 17 my mom helped me get a job at a cafeteria. She knew someone who new of a job in a cafeteria and that is often the way things can happen. Your parents have totally different connections than you do and they might be able to get some job leads though people they know or work with.

To get a job now you probably need help from someone who has an "in" with an employer or someone who happens to know of an open job. By getting your parents to ask around on your behalf, you will have more of a chance of making a connection with someone that can lead you to a job opening.

Many teenagers are hesitant to ask their parents for help, no matter what the situation is. They are too concerned about getting respect and looking like they don't need anyone's help. Sadly, many teenagers don't even have a good relationship with their parents for a variety of reasons.

But this is the time to put all differences aside and ask them for assistance. The economy is not going to get any better this summer and 17 year olds needing a job need to find one right away. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY JOBS FOR 17 YEAR OLDS

Our population is aging as the first wave of Baby Boomers is now starting to retire. That generation is the product of a lot of couples giving birth at the end of World War II and these Boomers are starting to create a big demand for retirement communities.

More and more retirement homes are popping up all over the country and the chances are that at least a couple of them are somewhere near you. This is the type of place you might never have considered looking for work but some of them might have hiring jobs for 17 year olds.

In order to work in a place like this you will have to be a teenager who is very respectful, polite, even tempered, patient, upbeat, and enjoys being around older people. If you have a spotless job record you might inquire to find out what types of jobs you qualify for.

I have three cousins who worked in the dining room area of an assisted living home when they were teenagers. It does take a special type of person who enjoys interacting with senior citizens who are often times not in the best of shape. One week from today on April 19th, McDonald's is going to hire up to 50,000 people across America. They are calling it the "national hiring day" and while they are really going to be hiring people, it is sort of just a stunt for publicity. Summer is very close now and they are gearing up for those busy months.

McDonald's has 1000's of restaurants that are hiring all the time so you can always go and apply for a job. You don't have to wait for April 19th. You can go to each individual McDonald's store and apply there or you can go to their website to see what stores near you have jobs that are open.

LESSONS FOR TEENS THAT CAN'T FIND JOBS

Just because you want a job (and maybe even are qualified for it) doesn't mean you will get it. One of the big mistakes you can make when applying for jobs is to use an email address that is unprofessional. If you are on the hunt for jobs for 17 year olds, make sure you make an email that you set up especially for employers.

Think about it, does an email address like "Iamhottoday@aol.com" or "sexyrachel@yahoo.com" sound like an email you should use when you apply for a job? JOB REFERENCES FOR 17 YEAR OLDS

While you are looking for summer jobs for 17 year olds, one of the things that could help you is a good reference. When you apply online or in person, you might be asked for one or more references that can vouch for you and say that you are a hard worker, honest, show up on time, etc.

Important---> It is very important to note that before you use anyone as a reference, no matter who they are, you should ask them first if it is alright. That includes your teachers, parents, other family members, and past managers. You have to make sure they know that they could be getting a call from someone who will be asking about you so that they are not caught off guard.

With affiliate marketing you don't have to have your own product or deal with any shipping because you are selling someone else's product or getting paid to get people to sign up for things. It is something you can do in your spare time and although it probably won't replace a summer job, it can bring in some extra money.

Many high school students already have a website or might be thinking of creating one. You can buy your own domain (about $9.00) and pay for hosting (about $4 to $10 per month) or you can start out with a free Blogger blog. The advantage of paying for your own site is that you actually own the site while a Blogger blog can be shut down if you inadvertently violate their terms or they consider it spam.

Having your own website and building it up is a lot of work buy many consider it fun if you enjoy what it is about. You should make your website around a topic that interests you so that you can continue to write and add content. You might also consider making your website about something you can make money off of where there are people looking to buy.

Always a challenge will be trying to get people to your site. The best way to get targeted visitors is by getting your website or blog to the front page of Google for the search terms you desire. That way you continue to get free traffic to your blog day after day and you can then figure out how to make money off that traffic. Being only 17, you may need to have help from your parents signing up to some affiliate programs but not all of them.

17 YEAR OLDS HAVE NO JOB HOURS RESTRICTIONS

Now that you are 17 years old, there are no hours restrictions put on you this summer when you get a job. You can work as much or as long as you want and you can work any hours during the day. This is different when you were younger and you were required by law to work only during certain hours.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour but you might legally make less if your job includes tips. Many waiter type jobs that are heavily dependant on tips do pay a lot less than minimum wage. Also, there are a few states (Alaska, Illinois, Oregon, and others) that have a minimum wage that is higher than $7.25 so you might make more depending on where you live.

Just because you are 17 doesn't meant that you can't make more than minimum wage. If you have experience and are good at what you do, you might indeed be able to make more. However, for the majority looking for summer jobs for 17 year olds, the $7.25 hourly amount is what you will be getting.

It appears that there are still more teenagers looking for jobs than there are jobs available again this year. 17 year olds will be up against more adults than younger teens because they can now apply for jobs that involve driving.

Many adults are frustrated as well about the bad economy and the lack of jobs which forces them to apply for jobs they wouldn't ordinarily want. So, if you are a 17 year old looking for a summer job, you may have to beat out some adults to get hired.

HIGH SCHOOL JOBS SHOULD NOT INTERFERE WITH SCHOOL

One of the potential problems of getting a job while you are in high school is that it can interfere with your studying and after school activities. That is, if you get a job during the months that school is in session.

Summer jobs are great because you have lots of free time and probably need to earn some extra money. Most kids have time to kill and a summer job is a great way to spend part of it. But if you get a job during the school year, it can take away from what some consider to be more important things, like homework. It is often not advisable for students to have jobs during the school year because it will mean less time to do the things that kids should be doing like studying, having fun, and participating in different activities.

With this economy being so poor though, many families may need their 17 year olds to work if they can all year long. Any additional money they can bring in to help the family is very important, especially if one or more of the parents are out of work. Completing your education seems to be the most important thing you can do when you are young and very few people would disagree with that. One thing you should make sure of when you are choosing possible jobs is that it won't interfere with your school. Having a job is great, especially now when they are so hard to find, but all teenagers should remember that going to school should be their first priority.

It might seem that school isn't that fun or won't benefit you that much. It might seem that having a job and making money is a better alternative and it won't matter if your school grades or activities suffer. But remember, any job a 17 year old can get is one that doesn't pay well and probably doesn't have much of a future. For instance, do you want to spend the rest of your life mixing shake a an Orange Julius in the mall or waiting on people behind a counter?
